Femke Wolting is Executive Director of Holland’s leading transmedia production outfit, Submarine, which she co-founded with Bruno Felix in 2000. Spanning film, animation, non-fiction and interactive genres, Submarine boasts a roster of award-winning productions created in collaboration with an extensive network of international creatives. Femke produced among others such films as Peter Greenaway’s feature Rembrandt’s J’accuse, documentaries like Another Perfect World, internationally-distributed animation series such as Kika & Bob, and games that push new forms of storytelling, such as Collapsus. Femke Wolting has directed a number of award-winning projects for Dutch broadcaster VPRO, including Sneakers and It’s the End of TV As We Know It. Additionally she was the initiator of Exploding Cinema (1995-2001), the International Rotterdam Film Festival’s annual look at the future of media, which included exhibitions in among others the Architecture Museum Rotterdam (NAI), Museum Boymans van Beuningen, conferences and film programs.
Bruno Felix is Executive Director of Holland’s leading transmedia production outfit, Submarine, which he co-founded with Femke Wolting in 2000. Spanning film, animation, non-fiction and interactive genres, Submarine boasts a roster of award-winning productions created in collaboration with an extensive network of international creatives. Bruno Felix seeks to push the boundaries of visual culture with projects that exploit new forms of storytelling, such as the ground-breaking animated documentary My Second Life or the games FLX, Gone and StyleClash, developed in collaboration the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Previously, Bruno was responsible for developing a new media strategy for Dutch Public broadcaster VPRO and was Director of VPRO Digital, a media research lab exploring the influence of digital technology on production and consumption of diverse media formats.
Before joining Submarine Channel in 2005, Remco worked as a freelance writer, curator, VJ and interaction designer. Initially, Remco started out as a web editor writing for Submarine Channel’s then blog and managing its social media channels. He initiated and ran the popular title design website Forget the Film, Watch the Titles, and he was editor in chief of the music video website 2Pause.com. Currently, Remco is a creative producer of interactive animation and narrative game projects. An avid graphic novel and comics enthusiast, Remco embraces the new and emerging interactive forms of the comics medium. He worked on the award-winning interactive graphic novel The Art of Pho and regularly presents and speaks about Submarine’s interactive comic and idoc projects at festivals and events. Currently he is developing, among other things, an ambitious distopian sci-fi interactive graphic novel, a comics journalism project, and an interactive documentary about superheroes.
Yaniv was still wet behind his ears when he walked into the our offices many years ago – way back when Submarine was still a tiny start-up. Yaniv joined the crew as an intern eager to learn a thing or two about PR and marketing. We tossed him in the deep end and let him figure it all out along the way. That he did! So much so, that he turned his internship into a full-time job, and Yaniv became our trusted Head of PR, next to being our Distribution and Sales Officer. He did eventually graduate, albeit 5 years later. Currently, Yaniv Wolf is a creative producer of interactive documentaries and transmedia projects. He initiated and produced Who Are The Champions? – a web documentary that explores the impact of the FIFA World Cup on the people who live and work around the soccer stadiums in three cities. And he produced Refugee Republic.
Corine Meijers is an interactive producer at Submarine Channel since 2014. She’s currently developing a wide variety of new projects, including Who Are The Champions? and Bistro In Vitro. Corine has studied cinema in the Netherlands and in Stockholm. She has several years of experience working as a producer/coordinator at international film festivals such as the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Netherlands Film Festival, TIFF (Romania), Holland Animation Film Festival and DTFF (Qatar). Before starting at Submarine, she lived in Belgium for several years, working at the MEDIA Desk Flemish Community, iDROPS; a digital innovation agency for the creative & cultural industries and BOZAR; the centre of fine arts in Brussels.
GEERT VAN DE WETERING
Geert likes strong images and compelling stories. But then again, who doesn’t? In the past decade Geert has been working as a journalist and as a director. For Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO, he initiated two TV series about art and culture. Besides that, he has been writing for several newspapers and magazines. From 2008 till 2014 Geert worked for Submarine and Submarine Channel as a creative producer. He was mostly occupied with Dutch Profiles, a series of 100 filmed portraits of the best Dutch architects and designers, and he was responsible for Submarine Channel’s video content. Besides that, he developed several transmedia projects such as Keep on Steppin’ and Unspeak. He’s currently writing a documentary script on the history of Dutch design and he works as an independent producer and director for Submarine Channel and others.
2Pause editor Maria is our right honorable movie geek. She is the living manifestation of a multimedia app and loves trawling the world wide web for the finest music videos to include on 2Pause.com, likes to get her digital mitts dirty with conversions, uploads and video edits for Submarine Channel, and also flirts with transmedia-related journalism, reporting from festivals like Cannes, Berlinale and IDFA for European Cinema collective NISI MASA. Previously, Maria worked as a sound and film editor for short movies Vicar’s Wife, Foetus Ex Machina, and Carousel, among others.
Until recently, Katy was a Submarine Channel editor and producer, who was also the main voice behind Submarine Channel’s social media activities. She moved back to her home town New York City in 2013 and is now our eyes and ears in the US. A new media thinker and film junkie with a passion for digital storytelling (and for food), she is also a co-founder of the digital research studio Affect Lab foundation. Besides that, she works on freelance data visualization projects. Previously, she was marketing manager at BrainPOP where her work focused on visual communication and creative production. Katy holds an MA in New Media and Digital Culture from the University of Amsterdam and a BA in Psychology from Binghamton University.
Lotje worked as an interactive producer and web editor for Submarine Channel until 2011, creating interactive web projects and writing about transformative visual culture for the channel. She is the initiator of Doctor/Dealer – a web documentary by Submarine Channel that is currently in development. Previously, she was director and co-founder of Maxalot Gallery, commissioning digital and interactive art exhibitions with genre pioneers such as Joshua Davis, Universal Everything, and The Designers Republic. Currently, Lotje lives and works in London where she produces and creates non-fiction content for the likes of ad agency Mother London and HonkyTonk Films (Paris). Willeke has worked on interactive and linear documentaries, animation and games projects for Submarine Channel and Submarine since 2007. She takes care of financing, planning and supervising, and spans a wide variety of projects. She has a super-soft spot for music and movies, which is why there’s a big chance you run into her at the Amsterdam cinemas, or music venues Paradiso and Melkweg. Previously, she worked at VPRO television in the realm of cultural programs like Lola da Musica and R.A.M and live coverage of music festivals.
CHRISTIAAN DE ROOIJ
Christiaan has been with Submarine since (almost) the dawn of the age, having started as a motion graphic, interaction and game designer back in 2003. He has been a key player as interaction, VFX, graphic, motion graphic, and interaction designer on many of Submarine’s proudest productions over the years, including The Tulse Luper Journey (Europrix Toptalent Award in 2006), Viktor & Rolf: “Because we’re worth it” (Skrien Poster Award nomination), the acclaimed virtual worlds documentary Another Perfect World, and the multiple-award-winning online experiences Collapsus and Last Hijack Interactive. Meanwhile, he keeps himself busy as lead designer on a plethora of Submarine projects.
JORRIT DE VRIES
Until 2013, Jorrit was our allround in-house developer who worked on projects such as the 3D games Sollmann and FLX– part of the Split Second project (a collaboration with Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam). He developed bespoke interactive applications like 2Pause, Forget the Film, Watch the Titles, games for the children’s TV hit Kika & Bob, and the Qi Game for Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum and, let’s not forget this very website. Naturally, he spends his spare time developing open source haptics. Everybody needs a Jorrit in their lives!
